Digi-Textile

Project Summary

Nigeria was the Africa's second-biggest economy up till 2013 and boasts of a prosperous textile industry till the mid-1980s. The industry grew in number to 175 firms, contributed substantially to the Nations’ GDP and had more than 250,000 employees. However, there are four problems, which have been identified to undermine the Nigerian textile industry to retain its status and be at its full potentials
(1) Enormous capital flight due to importation of foreign textiles estimated at over $4billion annually;
(2) Use of obsolete technologies in production and marketing;
(3) Lack of shift to align with the modern realities of the global fashion business; and,
(4) Lack of supply chain to interconnect raw materials, production, and the markets (local and foreign). The project “Digi-Textile” seeks to develop a digital ecosystem for the textile, fashion design and allied industry with a view to digitally transform the sector to be able to provide the lead in the African textile and fashion market by 2030.
